Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A Seperate Peace Really Pulls Through
A Seperate Peace by John Knowles is a spellbinding book that captivates the readers attention with an surprisingly evil story line that builds throughout the plot. The main characters, Finny and Gene are best friends and seniors at the Devon School for boys. Finny is an egotistical atheletic young man who is good at every sport ever invited, and Gene is a quiet shy boy who seems very bland and plain. Together they make an interesting blend. When an accident shatters through the glass of their world, things begin to change. This book held my attention throughout the plot, although the beginning was a little slow, starting with a reflection from Gene. I liked how the book was so realistic, showing the interaction between boys around my age group. It was also interesting to learn how life was during WWII, the time period in which this book is set. I didnt like the abrupt ending of the book, and I feel that it could have been done more skillfully, to reflect upon the rest of the book, which was very good. Overall, this is a good read. Go out and buy this book if you like stories with evil twists and excitement, and enjoy observing interactions between friends, and even enemies.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - The struggles and tragedies of two students during WWII
A Separate Peace is about the struggles and tragedies in the lives of some students at Devon, a fictional boys' college, during World War II. The story is written in a 1st person point of view as a flashback of the main character, Gene Forrester.

Gene is an intellectual, the class valedictorian, quite the opposite of his best friend, Phineas. Phineas, or Finny, as his friends call him, is quite popular and is the best athlete at Devon. These personality differences are a major source of conflict as Gene's jealousy of Finny becomes more apparent. Finny, however, is the perfect friend and never feels angry towards Gene.

Overall, it was a good story, and the characters were well-developed and realistic. I enjoyed it, but if you're looking for a happy, exciting story, this isn't one. The plot is sad in itself, and the atmosphere of winter and the war doesn't brighten it. Still, it had all the elements of a good story, but a bit more action would have helped.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - The loss of innocense - the dawn of war
John Knowles captures the loss of innocense in his "A Separate Peace." Set on the eve of a larger conflict overseas in World War II, the book is a stream of consciousness writing, as the narrator reflects after the war the incidents at Devon that were a sort of rites of passage for him into adulthood.

But 'A Separate Peace' also reveals the deep twists of an unusual friendship between a scholar and an athlete. Their bond and the betrayal that follows. It is a moving drama on a human scale, the climax and conclusion being most unexpected, but reminicent of the tragedy of war, not the resoluution of Peace.

For looking at the youth that will fight the war, rather than the war itself, the author details the peace found between friends that will have to recreated on the battlefield. An agonizing book, it will live in your heart long after you have read the last page.
