Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Into the Wild was an insightful look at Chris McCandless
Into the Wild is an insiring true story of a young man's adventures, and unfortunate death, in (where else?) the wild. Jon Krakauer was an outdoorsman, which enabled him to empathize with Chris McCandless and give the reader insight into McCandless' mind. Krakauer's experience as a reporter is evident in his concise, detailed writing, yet he manages to make the book more than a collection of facts about a young man's death in the wilderness. Even if the reader does not agree with some of McCandless' radical ideas, he will understand them. McCandless began his journey into the wild soon after his college graduation, journeying westward from Atlanta. After his truck died, he continued his adventures on foot and by hitchhiking. His life came to an end as a result of starvation in the Alaska wilderness. The information used to write this story was gathered from people who knew McCandless, including his family, people with whom he stayed between adventures, and the truck driver who was the last person to see him alive. Although it is tragic, Into the Wild is a fascinating story and one is left with a feeling of awe at the power of nature and the courage of one man to embrace it.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - An excellent account of a tragedy many dismissed as folly.
Krakauer, through riveting prose, well-researched reporting and review of cases of individuals who in the past have sought to test their characters in the wilderness, constructs a revealing and not unsympathetic portrait of a young college graduate from a wealthy, suburban family, who seeks enlightenment in the back woods of Alaska, only to starve to death. Krakauer is a meticulous journalist and has a gift for giving the reader a strong sense of place. He retraces the path of the young, ill-fated Chris McCandless through the Western U.S. and on to Alaska, and is not afraid to add his own spin to the story by recalling one of his own rather reckless experiences in the wild. He makes a strong case that McCandless, though perhaps naive, was not as foolish or as arrogant about nature as the general facts about the story make him seem. By the end of the book, Krakauer has not only given the reader insight into what made McCandless tick, but examined the odd, often contradictory impulses that drive some to seek solace by immersing themselves in nature

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Interesting
How does a young man leave a comfortable life with an education and well to do parents and just wander into the wild? This is one of the questions that Jon Krakauer tries to answer. At first the reader is given the idea that Chris McCandless read one too many books like "On the Road" or "White Fang", but as the story develops, he becomes more complex a character. This young man was looking for adventure and decided to leave "normal" life behind. Unfortanuatly for him. it cost him his life.

Krakauer does an amazing job of bringing McCandless back to life by trying to show what he was thinking. Krakauer used personal notes, interviews with family and friends and historical experiences to flesh out this person. When the personal notes run out and speculation starts, Krakauer gives a personal tale to explain why McCandless was not an idiot and just had some bad luck. This book is a very good read and is time well spent.
